  • Sacrifice far from home.

After the war, thousands of American service members remained buried overseas. Families faced a choice: bring their loved ones home or allow them to rest permanently near the battlefields where they died.

The American Battle Monuments Commission transformed distant battlefields into enduring places of memory, mourning and connection.

Color photograph of a large cemetery with white headstones and large hedges sectioning off a variety of areas. In the foreground are trees and a pond with flowers and bushes. In the background, there is a white building with archways, a large door and stairs leading up to it, along with trees and two American flags on poles.
