Sacrifice far from home.

After the war, thousands of American service members remained buried overseas. Families faced a choice: bring their loved ones home or allow them to rest permanently near the battlefields where they died.

The American Battle Monuments Commission transformed distant battlefields into enduring places of memory, mourning and connection.
