  • Color photograph of a cityscape. At the front center of the image is a large stone tower, flanked on either side by a statue of a winged sphinx and rectangular-shaped buildings with windows on their sides. In front of the tower are walkways, stairs that go down to a fountain and doors to a building, and green grass and trees.

    Memory made monumental.

Through extraordinary public support in the years immediately following World War I, the Liberty Memorial Association transformed local grief into a lasting national statement about sacrifice, democracy, remembrance, and peace with the building of the National WWI Museum and Memorial.

Black and white photograph of a very long lawn, with paths on either side and many people dressed in coats and hats standing around. Along the paths are flags of many different nations and in the distance there is a tall stone tower with a building on either side.
